Nigeria is economically, financially, academically, politically and socially stagnant. This is no joke neither am I seeking to defame my country.
This is the current situation in Nigeria and this stagnant position is rapidly leading to a retrogressive state. What is the solution to this unenviable position Nigeria has found herself in? The answer is Federalism.
What is federalism?Federalism is the distribution of power in an organization (as a government) between a central authority and the constituent units.
A Nigerian might say that Nigeria according to this definition practices federalism but that is completely false. Federalism was pioneered by the first colonists of the United States of America because they wanted their colonies or states to be autonomous and self dependent but they also realised the need for a central government to enhance unity and strengthen the defence and federalism was the answer.
This system of government ensured that the different state were autonomous in almost all aspects and they controlled their natural resources and generated their own revenue without waiting for monthly allocations from the federal government.
The federal government was mainly responsible for the military defense of the nation, collecting taxes from the state governments for their federal projects amongst others. Is this obtainable in Nigeria? The answer is a big emphatic no.
In Nigeria, the federal government has far more power than needed over the state governments and the state governments are far too reliant on the federal government.
In fact, many states are economically paralysed without the monthly allocations of the federal government and this has increased corruption and made the states so dependent on the federal government.
This is no federalism at all. The revenues realised from the resources in each states are then shared among the states.
This style of government looks more like a socialist government. There is no ounce of federalism in such a system of government and this contributed to Nigeria's current woes.
If Nigeria's leaders seek the progress of this nation they must then ensure that Nigeria is a federal state. This will ensure that the state government are self dependent, able to cater for their own citizens.
What do you think? I'm eagerly awaiting your comments.
